A temple where wishes are whispered by bell crickets: A small miracle encountered at Kegonji Temple in Kyoto

One autumn afternoon, I headed to a small temple in Nishiyama, Kyoto. Its name is Kegon-ji Temple, but locals and tourists alike call it Suzumushi-dera Temple.

As the name suggests, the chirps of bell crickets can be heard throughout the year within the temple grounds. I wondered if they only sound like crickets in autumn, and as I climbed the stone steps, I suddenly heard a gentle, chirping sound coming from somewhere. It was as if someone was speaking to me softly...or so I thought.

Jizo statue that will grant you one wish

At Suzumushi Temple, there is a Jizo statue wearing straw sandals.

"I hope that child's dream comes true." "I hope that the person I love can smile."

That wish was to walk up to the sky, carried by the sound of the bell crickets.

Inside the temple, it's like a picture book world

The mossy garden, the bamboo forest path, and the soft scent of incense. No matter which part you look at, it's like a page from a picture book. The bell crickets are quietly chirping inside the glass, and it's like a gathering of little poets.

The chief priest's words were like those of a storyteller. "To make your wishes come true, you must first take action yourself. And never forget to be grateful." These words lit a fire in my heart.

On the way home, the sound of bell crickets gave me a push

I placed the amulet in my pocket and, as I was descending the stone steps, I happened to look back. The quiet grounds, the sound of the crickets, and the moment I made my wish all remain in my heart like a treasure.

"Let's come again. This time, make a wish for someone."

Just as I was thinking this, I heard the chirps of bell crickets, and it felt as if they were saying, "Yes, I'm waiting."

Suzumushi Temple is not just a place that grants wishes, but a place that gives you the courage to take steps towards your wishes.

Cute, quiet, and a little mysterious. Come experience this little story of Kyoto for yourself.
