Hanamikoji Street: A stone-paved stage where the times dance

Hanamikoji Street - A stone-paved stage where the times dance

Hanamikoji Street runs through the center of Kyoto's Gion district. Stretching approximately 1km from Sanjo Street to Kenninji Temple, the cobblestone road is lined with traditional Kyoto townhouses, and at dusk, you can even see maiko (apprentice geisha) walking along it - it's a street where time seems to dance through the ages.

A street with two faces

With Shijo Street as the dividing line, Hanamikoji Street almost embraces two worlds.

• North side: This is an adult social area lined with restaurants and bars. This is where you'll find the bustle of Gion at night.
• South side: A quiet geisha district lined with traditional Kyoto townhouses and teahouses, the area is home to the prestigious Ichiriki-tei and Gion Kobu Kaburenjo theaters.

This southern side is the true essence of Hanamikoji Street. It is a living cultural stage where maiko and geisha hone their skills and traditional performing arts such as the Miyako Odori dance live on.

Historical Research: Memories of Kenninji Temple and the Red Light District

Kenninji Temple, located at the southern end of Hanamikoji Street, is Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, founded in 1202. This area was once temple land, but during the Edo period it became a bustling temple town, and from the Meiji period onwards, teahouse culture flourished.

In 1873, the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo was established, and it remains a hub for Kyoto's traditional performing arts, serving as a place where maiko and geiko could hone their skills.

Walking: A Dialogue with Culture

Walking along Hanamikoji Street is more than just sightseeing. The sound of footsteps echoing on the cobblestones creates a rhythm that connects the past and the present. The lights visible through the lattices of the townhouses, the presence of maiko passing by, and the tranquility of Kenninji Temple—all of these things allow you to feel the "breath" of the city of Kyoto.

Tourist etiquette also needs to be taken into consideration.
